Bobcat Pause is an annual event hosted by the Student Foundation and Dean of Students office at Texas State. “It is an honor for Student Foundation to host this event, which is student-run and a way for us to commemorate and remember members of the Bobcat family who have passed away,” said Leanna Mouton, Student Foundation executive committee member and Bobcat Pause director. “Although they are no longer with us, they will always be important to our university and the San Marcos community,” added Moutron, a Houston native who is majoring in Business Management.
The ceremony honors students and current and retired faculty and staff who have passed away during the previous year. “This event instills the importance of remembrance for families and offers comfort to those who mourn the deceased” said Mariela Martinez, Student Foundation president, an accounting major from Houston.
2017 marks the thirtieth year of Bobcat Pause. “Since 1987, the first year of Bobcat Pause, this tradition of commemorating lost Bobcats has grown in strength, in meaning, and in spirit,” said Dr. Margarita M. Arellano, Associate Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students. “I am very proud of our student leaders who present this important event.”
The event includes an opening reception featuring memorial tables, roll call (reading of the names of Texas State family members who have passed away), and remarks by Texas State President Denise M. Trauth. Also included is a musical selection from the San Marcos High School Choral Department, under the direction of SMHS Choir Director Dawn Sheridan-Reinhuber and Brigitte Smith and Zach Wiggs.. Student Foundation members will present a gift and flowers to family members during the roll call.
